Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin is set to make a special announcement regarding a top Malaysian shuttler who has failed a random doping test conducted during the World Championships in Copenhagen in August.
Everyone, including National Sports Institute (NSI) chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ramlan Aziz and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin are aware of the shuttler’s ‘A’ sample results.
The shuttler is awaiting the result of the “B” sample.
The NSI and those concerned will make a statement in due time, as it is a high-profile case and meticulous measures must be taken before the official statement is ready to be released.
The official confirmed that the shuttler had played in the recent Asian Games. Dr Ramlan and other sports officials had, so far, refused to comment on the issue.
However, speculations are abuzz that the athlete in question is World No.1 badminton player, Datuk Lee Chong Wei.
And even if the rumours were false, why would Khairy himself volunteered to give out an announcement?
The controversy is indeed symptomatic to the decaying Malaysian sports arena as the badminton champ was seen as the country’s only hope to achieve our fledgling Olympic dreams.
Meanwhile, according to numerous media reports, the player’s test result was made known to the coaches after the Asian Games that ran from Sept 19 to Oct 4, in Incheon, South Korea.
The Badminton World Federation, BAM and other related agencies has a lot on their plate as of now: the doping incident was the first in the history of national badminton and could effectively tarnish their image as a reputable organization.
As for the punishment, the player, if found guilty, could face a two-year suspension but he can appeal.MYNEWSHUB
